The walk down to the lake [click to enlarge]Les Gravasses is located between Tanus and the tiny hamlet of Crespin. It is a relatively undiscovered part of France and away from the well-worn tourist track. Situated at the end of a country lane, the peace and quiet at Les Gravasses is only disturbed by the odd farm vehicle as it passes by. Nearby, a track leads down to a vast, picturesque lake with shady spots for picnics.
Around the farmhouse, figs, apples, mirabelles and walnuts are abundant in the autumn months and the hedgerows are rich with blackberries. And above all, the panoramic views are remarkable. You’ll surely remember your holiday at Les Gravasses for the soaring eagles, harriers, buzzards and kites; the unexpected glimpses of the distant Pyrénées during the day; and the lack of light pollution at night prompting you to star-gaze and satellite-spot!Meeting the neighbours [click to enlarge]

Tanus
A little history...
Although the area around Tanus has been inhabited since Palaeolithic times, the commune of Tanus le Vieux was only created towards the end the 9th century.

Bordering the River Viaur, the village was captured by the Protestants during the "Guerres de Religion" in the 16th-century. Once peace returned to the area, however, the inhabitants of the village started to migrate uphill to the more fertile, flat land surrounding the hamlet of La Cabane.

Originally a group of just three or four houses, La Cabane was renamed Tanus during the 19th century.

Architecture
Remains of a tower from the medieval château in Tanus le Vieux, which was destroyed in 1775; the Viaur Viaduct bridging the Gorges du Viaur (built by Paul Bodin from 1898 to 1902); 19th-century parish church; 19th-century "Eglise de Fournials"; 12th-century "Eglise Notre-Dame-de-Las-Planques" (recently restored).
